5 Ways to Encourage Good Oral Hygiene Habits in Children

If you are a new parent or an adult who has children of your own, it is likely that your thoughts and actions regarding oral hygiene have changed since those first moments after birth. It is rare these days to find someone who doesn’t have some sort of improved approach to oral hygiene habits. This may be attributed to both technological and cultural advancements in the daily lives of people around us.

Regular Check-Ups With A Dentist

Children are more likely to visit the dentist if they see it as a normal part of life, but if you want them to be more comfortable visiting the dentist, it’s important to start young. Children can quickly develop a fear of dentists when they are still very young.

Normalising getting dental health check ups in your household by marking appointments in a calendar everyone can see and using positive language to refer to them. Doing so might encourage your child to see them as a positive, routine part of life. This can help your children feel comfortable about visiting the dentist, GP or other health professionals. It may reduce the chances of your child experiencing dental phobia or anxiety, common in patients of all ages but especially younger people. It helps to have an ongoing relationship with a local dentist in Ashburton so your child becomes familiar with them.

Lead By Example At Home

If you want to start a conversation with your kids about the importance of oral health, it is important that you model the behaviour.

Children generally imitate what they see adults doing, so if you brush and floss regularly, they will probably follow suit. If you don’t do this yourself, then it is up to them whether or not they do it themselves. In some cases, children may choose not to brush their teeth at all if their parents do not show any interest in these behaviors.

If your child does not know how to brush their teeth properly, then explain how important it is for a clean healthy mouth. Explain that there are bacteria on the surfaces of our teeth which can cause bad breath and tooth decay as well as gum disease if left untreated.

You could also explain that drinking fluoridated water is good for your teeth because it helps prevent cavities from forming and exfoliating our enamel which protects our teeth from decay and plaque build up.

Child-Friendly Products and Resources

As a parent, you’re probably well aware that your little ones need to brush their teeth every day. But what if you’re not sure how to get them started?

It can be hard to know where to turn when it comes to helping kids develop good oral hygiene habits. Here are some tips on how to get your children involved in brushing their teeth:

Start early! The earlier you start helping your child develop good oral hygiene habits, the better. Start by teaching them at a young age about brushing and flossing their teeth, and encourage them to use a toothbrushing device that helps make the process easier for them.

Make sure it’s fun! If you have one child who is more interested in learning about brushing than another child who is more interested in playing with toys, try using stickers or small prizes as rewards for participation.

Be sure they brush correctly! Teaching kids how to correctly brush their teeth is essential for healthy teeth and gums down the road. Learn where their teeth are located on each side of their mouth so they can move their tongue around while they brush — this will help dislodge food particles that may be stuck between the teeth or under the gum line.

Let Them Choose Their Toothbrush

Something as simple as allowing your child to choose their own toothbrushes (provided it is appropriate for them) can be beneficial in a few ways. It can help them feel a sense of ownership over their new belonging which may encourage them to use it more. They may even see it as an exciting new toy to use which is great because it may help them to see daily brushing and flossing as a fun activity.

It also allows children to become more familiar with the process of brushing their teeth, which will help them develop a habit of doing so regularly. This habit will also help children learn how important it is to keep their teeth clean and healthy, which will have them thinking twice before they eat something that could cause harm on their teeth or gums.

If you would like to get your child started on tooth brushing then why not take them shopping with you? You could take along some toothbrushes that have been specially designed for children (or even just find some at the supermarket). If you do this then make sure that you explain all about how these brushes work and how important it is for your child to brush properly every day!

Make Dental Care Fun!

If you’re a parent, you probably already know that good dental hygiene habits are important. But sometimes it can be hard to get your kids to brush their teeth daily. Or maybe they just don’t like the feeling of getting their teeth cleaned.

If this is the case for your kids, there are some creative ways you can use to promote healthy dental hygiene habits:

Use a sticker chart or star chart to track whether or not your child brushes their teeth every day. This will help them see how many times they missed and then reward them for making it into the next week!

Have your child “brush the teeth” of their favourite toy. Your child will love seeing how clean those little teeth really are after being “brushed” by their favourite toy!

Play music during brushing time so your child can enjoy music while doing something fun and rewarding at the same time! There are many different types of toothbrushes available today with different music options built in – check out our review on some of these options here .

After visiting the dentist, plan a fun activity together as a family that involves having clean mouths! Maybe go out for ice cream or go on an outingwhere your child can eat something delicious and sweet. You could also get together with friends or family members who have children that are the same age as your own – this is a great way to help your child make new friends!
